Bad Luck for Hillers: Baseball Team Loses 13th Straight Game of Season
Grossmont's league record falls to 0-8 a year after playing in CIF championship game at SDSU.
Grossmont High School won eight of its first 10 baseball games this season, looking to repeat its run of 2011, when the Hillers made it to Tony Gwynn Stadium and the CIF Division I title game.
But starting March 31, the team has lost 13 straight games—its biggest skid in memory.
The latest defeat was Thursday, when the host Hillers staged a last-inning comeback but fell short, losing to Valhalla 6-4. The Norsemen beat visiting Grossmont 4-3 two days earlier.

Of the three-run seventh inning Thursday, Grossmont coach Jim Earley said: “We’ve been battling like that for the last two weeks. … We’re getting close. We just give too many runs away. …. That’s the way we’ve been this year.”
Grossmont stranded three base runners each in the third and fourth innings and two in the fifth. Its scoring came in the sixth and seventh innings. The Hillers, who used at least five pitchers, saw their overall record fall to 8-15. Earley’s team is 0-8 in Grossmont Hills League.

“We’ve got a lot of young guys,” Earley said. “A lot of our [CIF playoff] kids graduated. Things like that happen.”
Helix visits Grossmont for a 4 p.m. game today (Friday). The Highlanders hope to end their own losing streak at two—both this week to West Hills High School of Santee. The defending CIF Division II champion Scotties coached by Cole Holland are 14-8 overall and 5-3 in league.
