Oregon’s loss is East County’s gain.

Dr. Michael Murphy—who also has a law degree—has moved to Sharp Grossmont Hospital as the local institution’s first chief medical officer, a new position. Michele Tarbet remains senior vice president and chief executive officer of the La Mesa hospital.

Murphy comes from the Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford, OR, where he has been the vice president of medical affairs, the hospital said.

He doesn’t have a permanent residence yet, since he just moved to San Diego, said hospital spokeswoman Nicole Quiroz.

“Murphy has more than 25 years of experience in health care, with the majority in leadership roles including quality, medical staff services, and resource management,” the hospital said.

His previous experience includes vice president of medical affairs at City Hospital in Martinsburg, VA, and private practice in Salem, OR.

“In that capacity,” the hospital said,  “he implemented electronic medical records and computerized billing.”

Murphy received his medical degree from Thomas Jefferson University College of Medicine in Philadelphia and completed his residency in OB/GYN at Abington Memorial Hospital in Abington, PA.

He is certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.  He also obtained a law degree from Willamette University College of Law in Salem, Oregon.

“In his new role, Dr. Murphy will present a physician perspective at the senior management level and provide medical leadership in collaboration with the senior management team, as well as work in tandem with the medical staff to further the clinical goals and strategic objectives of the hospital,” the hospital said.

Sharp Grossmont Hospital, the largest not-for-profit, acute care hospital in East County, has been serving the community for more than 50 years.
