Encinitas All-Stars Beat La Mesa National to Set Up Rematch for Title

Little Leaguers ages 11 and 12 taking first steps toward regional tournament that decides who goes to Williamsport, PA.

All-Stars from the Encinitas National Little League beat their La Mesa National counterparts Tuesday night 10-4 to stay alive in the section championships for 11- and 12-year-olds. In the game played at 4S Ranch Sports Park near Rancho Penasquitos, La Mesa led off with three runs in the first inning. Encinitas answered with two runs in the bottom half.

La Mesa scored a run in the second, and Encinitas added three in the third.  But in the fourth inning, Encinitas scored five runs—with the help of two home runs. Marcus Alzard hit home runs in the first and fourth innings for Encinitas. And Encinitas pitcher Mickey Moniak held La Mesa scoreless the rest of the game. Jake Goddard pitched for La Mesa into the fourth inning. The La Mesa National All-Stars are coached by L.B. Havird.

With both teams now owning one loss, they play each other again at 6 p.m. Wednesday to decide the Section 6 title in the double-elimination tournament. The winner goes on to play for a Southern California subdivision crown, which leads to a Western Regional tournament.

Western Region 2 divisional winners and four state champions will play Aug. 5-13 in San Bernardino. The winner will advance to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, PA
