Former Police Chief to the New One: Take Care of Yourself Out There

Cliff Resch: "I applaud Mr. Witt [for] his calm, methodical approach to an important decision."

To the editor:

I heard on Monday from Ed [Aceves] of his promotion. He shot me an email after it became official from the city manager. Needless to say, I am thrilled for Ed, his family, the La Mesa Police Department and the city as a whole.

As you know, I not only endorsed Ed being promoted to the chief’s position but I also strongly was in favor of selecting a candidate from inside the department.

I believe City Manager Dave Witt not only chose the best person for the job but also acted in the best interest of the city without having to succumb to political pressures or other influences.

I am very pleased at his decision and feel it will be a tremendous benefit to La Mesa and San Diego County law enforcement for years to come. I applaud Mr. Witt as this is typical of his calm, methodical approach to an important decision.

There is no question in my mind as to Ed Aceve’s ability to provide solid and enthusiastic leadership while allowing his officers and employees to be creative and imaginative on behalf of the fine citizens of La Mesa.

As for giving him any advice, I think he knows exactly the direction he wants to go with his organization. He doesn’t need me or anyone else to guide him. The only suggestion I would offer him is to be sure and take care of himself, physically, emotionally and psychologically.

The chief of police job is a lot tougher than most would realize and he needs to care for his personal well-being if he is going to look out for the well-being of an entire Police Pepartment. But Ed is an intelligent and enthusiastic guy. I look for great things to come from the La Mesa Police Department for the next several years.
