La Mesa Premiere Set for ‘The Great Intervention’ by 1985 Helix Graduate

Steve Moramarco brings his mockumentary to a theater he performed in as a teenager.

A quarter-century after performing at the Helix Little Theater, Steve Moramarco is returning to Helix Charter High School next month—along with his 90-minute film The Great Intervention.

The La Mesa premiere of the mockumentary based on Moramarco’s own depression story will be at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 26, at the school theater. Tickets are $10.

The 1985 graduate also has a Facebook event page devoted to the homecoming premiere. The movie, which he also wrote and directed, was shown Oct. 19 in Brooklyn.

Moramarco has worked with Jack Black on films like School of Rock and was an associate producer on Tenacious D: The Pick of Destiny. He also had the honor of appearing on the flip side of Beck's first single "MTV Makes Me Want to Smoke Crack."

La Mesa’s David Moye, a columnist for Huffington Post Weird News who wrote about Moramarco  in January, says:  “This film has not been rated, but if it were, it would be PG-13 for language, pixelated nudity, and adult situations involving peanut butter.”

Moye sent this synopsis:

Steve Moramarco, a single, unemployed 40-something Man-Child, thinks he has finally been discovered by a documentary film crew after years of languishing in obscurity.

A few minutes into the film, we discover that it is his parents who are behind this, in an attempt to collect evidence for a Life Intervention.

We follow Steve, his parents, his best friend and his former girlfriends as they all lurch towards the day that will forever after be known as The Great Intervention.

Moramarco raised $5,000 on Kickstarter for the project and immediately began filming, Moye said.

“There was no script, just a detailed outline,” Moye said. “Actors improvised within a structured scenario. Most of the scenes in the film were done in one take.”
