Man Killed on Freeway and Driven to Lemon Grove Identified as Lon Scully

Victim, 74, was reported to be a La Mesan, but an online address placed him in Spring Valley.

The local man killed Friday in a freeway accident and driven* by a motorist to a Lemon Grove home was identified Saturday as Lon Scully, who would have turned 75 on Aug. 1.

Although authorities reported Scully was a La Mesa resident, the online directory spokeo.com said he lived alone in the 3400 block of Trophy Drive in Spring Valley, just south of the 125 highway.

County officials were unavailable to clarify his place of residence, although they reported no next-of-kin had been notified.

“Arriving CHP officers and fire personnel confirmed his death at the scene due to obvious fatal trauma,” said the Medical Examiner’s Office.

CHP Officer Brian Pennings said Mittleman, 46, was driving southbound on state Route 125 at about 2 a.m. when his vehicle struck the man, who was walking or standing in a middle traffic lane near Spring Street in Spring Valley.

With the victim’s body lodged in the front seat, the driver panicked and drove home just a couple of miles from where the accident took place, Pennings said.

“He was pretty traumatized,” Pennings said Friday.

The impact severed the deceased man’s lower legs, Pennings said, and sent the rest of his body through the windshield into the vehicle.

It wasn’t known why Scully was on the freeway, and the Medical Examiner’s Office classified the death as an accident.

*Editor's note: An earlier version of this story incorrectly said the victim was dragged to Lemon Grove home. In fact, his body was in the car after smashing the windshield.
