Grossmont High School Claims $25,000 First Prize in ‘Walk the Walk’ Contest

Twenty Foothillers go last, finish first with "sick" performance at Huntington Beach event. Money goes to ASB projects—to be decided later.

Update: Grossmont High School tallied 50,208 online votes—389 more than runner-up Peterborough High School of Toronto, Ontario—to win the Hurley “Walk the Walk” fashion show contest at the Huntington Beach pier on Thursday night.  A check for $25,000 was presented to the performers, with the prize going to the Associated Student Body.

Just before and after the show entitled “Power of One," a large contingent of Grossmont backers shouted: “Whose house? G-House!” — a familiar chant at school sporting events. After the performance at 5:15 p.m., the judges called the routine “sick” and actor BooBoo Stewart said he was blown away by the Hillers.

One of the hosts of the show, streamed live online, said: “That’s a lot of damn energy from one school; I’m very proud of their school.”

With a $25,000 prize at stake, Grossmont High School friends and family members were being encouraged to vote online for the Foothillers today (Thursday) as a 20-member student troupe performs a fashion show in Huntington Beach.

Grossmont’s team is a finalist in the Hurley “Walk the Walk” competition at the U.S. Open of Surfing in Orange County.

The local students will perform sometime after 4 p.m., and their routine can be watched online at usopenofsurfing.com, said Catherine Martin, a spokeswoman for the Grossmont Union High School District. Look for the Walk the Walk live stream link on the right side of the homepage.

“Just log on at 4 p.m. to watch the competition, which should last about an hour,” Martin said.  “Grossmont is last in the lineup to perform. Immediately following Grossmont's performance, the voting window opens for 30 minutes.”

The Hillers are guaranteed at least a $5,000 prize as a finalist, but Martin said: “Voting is a crucial part of the scoring and they need your help!”

Jeremy Hersch, the Associated Student Body faculty adviser, says any prize money would go toward ASB activities or projects, which will be decided by students.
