Paloma's Shrimp Burrito with Cream Doesn't Rise to the Top

This week's edition of The Burrito Blotter takes us to Paloma's in Spring Valley.

Shrimp burritos are a fickle beast.

I have had many good ones and many bad ones in my day, and it's often not hard to tell them apart. Overcooking the shrimp or having too few of the little guys swimming around in your burrito, and it's likely to not be enjoyable. Most shrimp burritos are all typically the same type of thing as well: shrimp, rice, sometimes sour cream, perhaps another sauce.

When I was recently at on Sweetwater Lane, and I saw the Shrimp Burrito (cooked with a creamy sauce) I was intrigued, and hopeful that it wouldn't be the same old standard.

As always in , I break it down:

Tortilla
Very soft, and a little bit moist actually, tortilla. I'm all for soft, fluffy tortillas, but the hint dampness made it a tad underwhelming. The tortilla did have a good flour flavor however.

Rice
There was a hearty amount of rice in this burrito. In fact, in my first bite, all I got was rice. Which would have been fine had I ordered a "rice" burrito. But I didn't. The rice was firm and mildly flavorful, but adding a little more seasoning would have done wonders.

Shrimp
The shrimp were small and scarce. Not something you want to have when delving into the fruit of the sea. In all honestly, I think I could count the number of shrimp in the entire burrito on two hands. And my own hands, not the six-fingered man from The Princess Bride's hands. As in, less than 10. Another bad sign. They were cooked well, but that's about all I can say for them.

Cream Sauce
This was essentially the main reason I chose this burrito off the menu, and yet, this too was disappointing. This "Cream Sauce" was pretty non-existent, and from what I could tell it was nothing more than a little bit of sour cream with some lime and spices added in. In fact, the only real "sauce" that the burrito had was residual moisture from the rice and seasoning mixture.

Vegetables
Additionally, there were no real vegetables in this burrito either, save for a few strands of roasted green peppers. The menu claims that this burrito comes with rice and vegetables. Well, I guess they were right on one of those.

Overall
Too much rice. Not enough shrimp. No definable "cream sauce." No vegetables. Moist tortilla. Yikes, the results were not good. Needless to say, I came away from this meal decidedly underwhelmed.
