Four days after turning 18, a driver was arrested early Thursday after running from a police officer attempting to pull over his vehicle, which lacked license plates, authorities said.

The officer was trying to pull over the Lincoln sedan in the vicinity of Amherst and 69th streets, near the La Mesa-San Diego boundary, around 1:30 a.m., said La Mesa police Sgt. Bret Richards.

The driver, later identified as Nathaniel Evan Gaines, failed to yield and made a couple of turns before he got out of the vehicle and ran, jumping over fences to get into the back yard of a residence in the 6900 block of Eberhart Street, Richards said.

The officer caught up with Gaines, who was taken into custody on suspicion of resisting a police officer, Richards said.
