Three-Ring Circus Comes to Valhalla: Conference Track and Field Finals
Grossmont, Helix, Mount Miguel and other schools trot out their star runners, jumpers and throwers at El Cajon bluff amid breezy chill.
With weather going from breezy and cool to sunny and fresh—and then back to chilly at dusk—the Grossmont Conference track championships Friday offered a climate for everyone. Parents wearing jackets or wrapped in blankets cheered from the stands or fences, and old track fans came out to savor the three-ring atmosphere, with red-jacketed starters warning parents with small children the gun was about to go off.
In the final event, Grossmont High School’s favored 4x400-meter boys relay team was upset by Mt. Miguel High School at Valhalla’s all-weather track. But plenty of Hillers, and Highlanders as well, excelled in the final meet before CIF. One reliable star was Helix’s Lee McAllister, who won the 1500-meter run and came back later to compete in the 3200—about two miles.
