Was Thunder Stolen From Veterans Memorial Parkway Fete? Signs Up
Fletcher Parkway drivers notice new signage on median across from the Auto Club building—10 days before ceremonial unveiling.
For six months, the city has been promoting a “sign unveiling ceremony” in early June. The sign—denoting a section of Fletcher Parkway as Veterans Memorial Parkway—has been shown at La Mesa council meetings in artist’s renderings.
But sometime this week—days ahead of Memorial Day—the real signs appeared on a median in the 8700 block of Fletcher Parkway, nearly across from offices of the Auto Club of Southern California, aka AAA, and across from McDonald’s near Baltimore Drive.
No surprises in the design.

But one location is a revelation. In November, Assistant City Manager Yvonne Garrett said two signs—installed at a cost of $10,000 paid by “community sources”—would be near the Marengo Avenue and Dallas Street intersections with Fletcher Parkway.
One in public view this week is between them—east of Nagel Street. No Dallas Street sign is visible.

Councilman Dave Allan originated the idea for the signage—which won’t formally rename Fletcher Parkway. It’s to honor American military veterans.
The sign unveiling ceremony, meanwhile, is still 10 a.m. Friday, June 3, at the football field of Parkway Middle School, 9009 Park Plaza Dr. It follows a pancake breakfast hosted by the La Mesa Firemen’s Association at La Mesita Park, 8855 Dallas St.
