Why No Interest in VFW Essay Contests, With Cash Prizes Available to Students?

Jack Porath: "In this era when everyone is searching for scholarship money and award for work, it is indeed surprising to find the lack of participation."

To the editor:

This is in reference to my Letter to the Editor, $40,000 in Prizes Available to Winners of VFW Essay Contests for Students, that ran in La Mesa Patch on Oct. 17.

It is VERY disappointing for me to say that not one individual (student, parent, teacher, etc,) submitted an entry. Nor did anyone call the captain of the VFW Ship whose phone number was listed in the article to inquire further.

This is a yearly program, which will be announced again next year when the new theme is known.

The Ship sent letters to the La Mesa schools in May of this year providing pertinent information concerning the Patriot’s Pen Award (grades 6-8), Voice of Democracy Award (grades 9-12) and the Teachers Award.
