East Bay Chefs Chosen As James Beard Awards Semifinalists
Restaurants were also singled out for the prestigious upcoming culinary awards.
EAST BAY, CA — Several Oakland chefs and restaurants have been named as semifinalists for the prestigious James Beard Restaurant and Chef Awards.
Crystal Wahpepah of Wahpepah's Kitchen is a semifinalist for Emerging Chef. Reem Assil of Reem's, both Oakland and San Francisco, is a semifinalist for Outstanding Chef. James Syhabout of Commis is a semifinalist for Best Chefs of California.
Horn BBQ is recognized in the Best New Restaurant category. The Punchdown is a semifinalist for Outstanding Wine Program. Friends and Family is recognized in the Outstanding Bar Program category.

"Winners will be celebrated at the James Beard Restaurant and Chef Awards ceremony on Monday, June 13, 2022, at the Lyric Opera of Chicago," the semifinal's announcement states.
