LAMORINDA, CA — Patch reader Arleen Thomas snapped this photo she calls "Gary from Spongebob" last month while hiking in Orinda's Wilder Community.
"May showers don't stop me from hiking! But this little fellow almost made me lose my step! So I got down on my knees to get its best side...now my knees hurt," Arleen wrote in an email to Patch.
Fun Fact: Yes, the rain really does bring out snails like Gary.

According to GoAptive.com: "Both snails and slugs rely on moisture to survive. Their bodies dry out very quickly when they are active without moisture to support them. This is why they only become active when it rains or when you’ve recently watered your garden."
Thanks so much for sharing, Arleen!
