Lafayette Appoints John McCormick To City Council
McCormick, a Lafayette resident for over 30 years, was unanimously selected to fill the seat formerly held by Teresa Gerringer.

LAFAYETTE, CA — Lafayette has a new City Council member but he is not new to the city.
Planning Commissioner John McCormick was appointed to fill a vacancy created by the resignation this month of longtime Councilmember Teresa Gerringer.
Gerringer announced her resignation in December which coincided with her retirement. She cited family reasons and said she was looking forward to starting the next chapter of her life with her family in the Pacific Northwest. It ends a long stint of public service for Gerringer in Contra Costa County. Before her election to the Lafayette City Council in 2018, Gerringer was on the Lafayette School Board for 18 years. In December, she retired from her day job as a public servant working as the chief of staff for District 3 County Supervisor Diane Burgis.

The City Council held a recruitment and received seven applications. After interviewing the applicants Monday in a special meeting, the City Council unanimously selected McCormick to fill the vacancy through the end of this year.
McCormick has been a resident of Lafayette for over 30 years and brought up his two children in the city. He co-owns a local music store, Lamorinda Music, which he founded with his wife in 2009. He serves as chair of the city's Land Acknowledgement Task Force and was selected earlier this year to serve on the city's Planning Commission.

McCormick also currently serves on the Board of Directors for both the Lafayette Chamber of Commerce and the Park Theatre Trust. In 2021, he was honored as the Lafayette Business Person of the Year.
McCormick retired from the software industry in 2017. He holds a bachelor's degree in engineering from UC Berkeley and recently received his master’s degree in history from Harvard. He also wrote a book, "Chinese in Napa Valley," which was released last year.

In addition to McCormick, the current City Council is comprised of Mayor Gina Dawson, Vice Mayor Wei-Tai Kwok, Council Member Carl Anduri and Council Member Susan Candell.
Four of five council members' terms expire at the end of this year; Candell is the lone council member whose term does not expire until 2026.
