1 Dead In Police Pursuit On Highway 24 In Orinda

Westbound lanes on the highway remain closed as authorities investigate.

ORINDA, CA — One person was killed after a car that officials say fled from an officer in Orinda, leading police on a chase, crashed on Highway 24.

According to the Contra Costa County Sheriff's office, Orinda police attempted a traffic stop for vehicle code violations in the area of St. Stephens Drive and Tahos Road just after 9 a.m. Saturday. The sheriff's office said the car fled at a high rate of speed when the officer approached, leading the officer on a pursuit.

As the car drove on to westbound Highway 24, the officer lost sight of the vehicle and later saw that it had crashed near the BART station on the highway.

There were two people inside the car who were taken to a hospital. One of the occupants was pronounced dead. The occupants have not been identified.

The district attorney's office, the sheriff's office and the CHP are investigating the incident.

The CHP said there is no time estimate on the when the westbound side of the highway will reopen.
