Fran Aldwell's Mill Valley Soccer Club U14 boys team narrowly escaped a draw against Sonoma FC with a late game winning goal, shot from way outside by powerhouse Matt Copeland. The 3-2 final was a build up of various contributions from the starting 11 and the bench alike showing the depth of Aldwell's roster.

Just minutes into the first half two Twin Cities players connected to give the Fusion the early lead. Central defender Spencer Key chipped the ball over Sonoma's defenders to an eager and fast footed Addison Brady who finished with his first touch for the goal.

Sonoma answered later in the half with a strong cross and shot but Fusion dominated the passing and tackles throughout the half. Brodie Cohen showed his versatility moving to play side fullback in the absence of two regular side defenders. His solid tackles kept Sonoma from reaching the box at many moments.

Zack Kopstein, Griffin Knorpp of Larkspur and Jason Diaz of Corte Madera worked methodically in the midfield winning headers and toughing out fouls to give Fusion 10 free kicks. The tenacity award went to Willzie Connelly who came away with two assists on the day and most touches on the ball.

Kentfield's Matt Wallace continued his signature passes down the line to forwards Austin Paul and Kyle Zucker. Corte Madera's Zucker was in his element today, assertively collecting balls and driving the momentum forward. Paul led in shots coming away with the second goal fed from Connelly.

Highest praise though goes to keeper Sam Emblidge who has raised the bar on what is expected of a goalie at this level. All season long he has made some astounding diving saves, thwarting penalty kickers, punching clears and making runs to strip oncoming strikers of any possible shooting angle. With 15 saves/collects in this game alone, fearless Emblidge shows a sureness of collecting the ball that makes him the envy of the league.

Come check out Emblidge and the Fusion next weekend Oct. 8, Saturday at Tam High as they face off against Napa FC at 9 a.m. Go Fusion!
