2 Drivers Arrested At DUI Checkpoint In Lemon Grove

LEMON GROVE, CA — Two drivers were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol over the weekend at a checkpoint in San Diego's East County, authorities said.

The checkpoint took place from 8 p.m. Saturday to 2 a.m. Sunday near Broadway and Kempf Street in Lemon Grove, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Office.

"DUI checkpoint locations are determined based on data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes," the sheriff's office said in a news release. "The primary purpose of DUI checkpoints is to promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off the road. Deputies also ensure all drivers are properly licensed."

A total of 257 vehicles went through the checkpoint and 29 vehicles were sent to a secondary inspection point for evaluation.

There were six drivers who were evaluated for driving under the influence and two drivers were arrested for DUI, according to the sheriff's office. Seven drivers were cited for operating a vehicle unlicensed, and one driver was cited for not having a driver's license with them.

Funding for the checkpoint was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
