Gate Fire: Huge Blaze Now At 1,500 Acres, Thirty Percent Contained

Breaking: Campground remains evacuated, State Road 94 and Otay Lakes Road remain shut down.

JAMUL, CA — San Diego Firefighters are entering their second day battling the rapidly-spreading Gate Fire south of Jamul. It is now a 1,500-acre vegetation fire that is said to be 30-percent contained. The fast-moving brush fire broke out along State Route 94 south of Jamul Saturday afternoon. State Route 94 is now closed in both directions from Otay Lakes Road to State Road 188 due to the fire.

Officials say the evacuation order for the Pio Pico campground remains in effect due to infrastructure damage at the campground. Most residents have been relocated to the Red Cross evacuation center at Otay Ranch High School in Chula Vista.

Dulzura remains under an evacuation warning although residents that chose to evacuate were escorted back to their homes overnight. Evacuated residents can go to San Diego Red Cross shelter at Otay Ranch High School, 1250 Olympic Parkway,CV, 91913.

Six fire engines, one helicopter, two air tankers, two water tenders, four hand crews and an air tactical aircraft are assigned to fight the fire. No injuries have been reported. Officials say it is too early to estimate when the fire would be extinguished.
