'Suspicious Device' Shuts Down Busy Livermore Area

The area around Railroad Avenue was closed for two hours due to a suspicious object, leading to wide-ranging Reddit speculation.

LIVERMORE, CA — Livermore police temporarily closed a section of Railroad Avenue between L Street and South Livermore Avenue after a suspicious device was reported last Thursday, LPD spokesperson Azenith Smith confirmed to Patch.

Safety crews investigated the item to ensure it was safe, and eventually re-opened the area after about two hours. Photos taken at the scene show a containment vessel used by bomb squads to transport suspicious items.

Police were not able to provide specific information about the suspicious object, but commenters on Reddit theorized it could have been an old military artifact dating back to World War II, when the former Naval Air Station Livermore trained Navy pilots on the site of what is now the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Some Reddit users noted that the object was found near a former railroad depot, suggesting possible wartime aircraft activity or historic transport routes.
