Did you know that the roots of today’s Cabernet Sauvignon lie in Livermore? It all started in 1883 when James Concannon planted his first vineyards, but our legacy was born in 1893 when James travelled to France for discovery of Cabernet Sauvignon vines for his newly established winery — Concannon Vineyard. Hailing from Château Margaux in the Bordeaux wine region of France, these renowned Cabernet vines have made a lasting impact on California winemaking.

Fast forward to 1965 when third generation vintner, Jim Concannon, collaborated with Dr. Harold Olmo and Curt Alley of UC Davis to clone our high-quality, high-yield and disease-resistant Cabernet Sauvignon vines. Jim and the UC Davis team took three cuttings from our esteemed Château Margaux Mother Vine and planted each on their own. These cuttings grew into what are now known as the Concannon Clones 7, 8, and 11. Cuttings from these three incredible clones were distributed to California winemakers after the 1976 Judgment of Paris, an event that not only put California Cabernet Sauvignon on the map, but also triggered increased demand for Cabernet Sauvignon vines all over California.

Soon thereafter, Concannon Clones became the industry standard and played an invaluable, distinctive role in helping California and Napa Valley Cabernet achieve international recognition. Today, it is estimated that 80% of the Cabernet Sauvignon planted in California comes from Concannon Clones.

Concannon didn’t create international Cabernet Day, but one might say that a bottle of Mother Vine Cabernet is the only way to celebrate. Save 20% on Cabernet today (and all Concannon favorites) when you join our mailing list to stay connected to estate news and exclusive offers.
