Elderly Livermore Woman Falls Victim To Internet Scam: Police

Police say the senior resident sent money to Phoenix.

LIVERMORE, CA — A senior Livermore resident is the latest victim of an online scam after sending $9,500 to a person in Arizona, police said.

Police arrested Zhenghui Wang, 25, on suspected charges of theft by false pretenses. Police said there were additional charges but did not say what those charges were. It is unknown if the suspect is still in custody and what the penalties could be.

The woman called police after she sent money via UPS overnight to a drop-off location at a CVS in Phoenix, police said. She told police she sent the money to a person named Jason Chew.

A Livermore police officer was able to get in touch with the store manager and asked them to set the package aside. The officer contacted police in Phoenix who then waited for the suspect to pick up the package and arrested them after they used a fake ID to pick it up, police said.
