LIVERMORE, CA — Star Students are found in classrooms, on concert and theater stages and at debate lecterns, and out in the community doing good things to make life better for all of us. Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize Star Students, and we’re working to tell the stories of these outstanding kids to their neighbors. This submission comes from Livermore High School teacher Susan Johnston, who nominated her student Rohan.

Star local student’s name Rohan

How do you know the star local student?

Rohan has been a student in my math and science classes over the past three years.

Why do you believe the star local student should be recognized?

Rohan is passionate about financial literacy. Rohan is on a mission to help all students in California understand their own finances and how knowledge about finance at a young age will help students have a more productive, longer and happier life. Demonstrating this is his work toward financial literacy in our community.

First, he began the Investment Club for all students at Livermore High School. Next, he worked with teachers and administrators to get a unit in financial literacy taught in ALL Algebra 2 courses so that every student at the high school will be exposed to financial literacy curriculum. Next, he worked with the district adminstrative team to begin a course specifically in Finance for all students. His next step is to educate younger students about financial literacy.

As part of his Investing Club he, along with club members, are developing curriculum specifically in Financial Literacy called "Financial Literacy In A Box". As part of this program, he is developing his own financial curriculum for middle school students. The group is then organizing the curriculum and all needed supplies to teach it into one box that they give to middle school teachers. The boxes are available free of charge for all middle school teachers that would like them. He is providing them to all district middle schools and to all teachers that request them.

In addition, he is finding middle school math teachers at schools with low-socioeconomic levels and giving them these boxes, along with professional development for the teachers if needed. This is all being done through the inspiration, passion, hardwork and comittment by one student. Rohan shows us all that one student can have a powerful effect on changing the world by empowering youth with their own sense of making sound financial decisions he is allowing them to succeed at a higher level than they would not normally be able to do.

What's one thing you want everyone to know about the star local student?

Rohan is passionate about educating young students in financial literacy and empowering students to reach their goal as a result of good financial decisions.

Congratulations on your achievements, and all of our best wishes to you in the future, Rohan!
