Leaving Idling Cars Unattended is Illegal and Can Lead to Theft, Police Say
Police officials said two cars left unattended and running were recently stolen in Livermore.
LIVERMORE, CA: The Livermore Police Department is reminding area residents that it is unwise and illegal to leave running vehicles unattended after two vehicle thefts occurred on Monday morning. Monday around 6:30 a.m., a Buick that was left unattended while the owner warmed it up was stolen.Â
The Buick was recovered later that morning after an officer found the key in the possession of a parolee during an unrelated pedestrian stop in the vicinity of First Street and Las Positas Road, police said. Then around 10 a.m., a Toyota minivan was stolen when it was left running and unattended in front of a business in the vicinity of East Stanley and Murrieta boulevards. That vehicle has not been recovered.
The Livermore Police Department said that the Livermore municipal code requires drivers to stop the engine, remove the keys from the ignition and take them out of any private, non-commercial vehicle left unattended on any street, alley or unattended parking lot.
