MODESTO, CA — "Let's go, Brandon," a right-wing rallying cry used to insult President Joe Biden, was stamped in red ink on hundreds of tax letters in a California county and mailed to hundreds of people.

As Charlotte Patch previously reported, the phrase "Let's Go Brandon" was an accidental meme with origins at a 2021 race at Talladega, Alabama. For the uninitiated, stock-car driver Brandon Brown accepted the checkered flag and stood in front of the grandstands as fans behind him chanted.

The broadcast reporter interviewing Brown said the fans were chanting "Let's Go Brandon" in the victorious moment. They weren't. Instead, it was a clearly audible chant saying "F--- Joe Biden."

Thus, a right-wing conservative rallying cry was born on the worn asphalt in Alabama, and the phrase quickly spread nationwide.

Stanislaus County officials told KOVR that, somehow, the vulgar phrase ended up on about 544 official letters mailed out by the county's tax assessor and treasurer-tax collector’s offices. The county called it an "error" from a contractor, who has apologized.

“Our office is completely nonpartisan,”Don Gaekle, the county assessor, told the TV station. “We didn’t have anything to do with it.”

The Modesto Bee got hold of one of the envelopes, stamped in red ink with the phrase, and posted a photo of it in an editorial column. The county told the Bee recipients will receive a second letter containing an apology.
