Livermore High School’s Class of 2024 valedictorian Michael Zhang capped off his senior year with a 4.74 GPA, 15 AP classes and recognition as a National Merit Scholarship semifinalist. While academic excellence was a natural outcome, Zhang said it wasn’t the end goal.

“Being valedictorian wasn’t really the goal. I just took the hardest classes I could and the most advanced classes I could,” he said in an article on The Independent.

Zhang’s love for STEM guided many of his pursuits, including his work with the school’s Science Olympiad team and his U.S. Physics Olympiad silver medal. He conducted nuclear materials and astrophysics research during internships at Purdue and Stony Brook, founded the physics club at LHS, and led both the math and investment clubs.

Outside the classroom, he served on the Livermore Area Youth Advisory Committee and the Global Leadership Initiative for Youth, mentoring peers and giving back to his community. He is also an accomplished pianist and Chamber Orchestra member, and was recognized by the National Piano Guild for his musical talent.

LHS Principal Roxana Mohammed described Michael as “an extraordinary student whose achievements, leadership and dedication to service reflect his outstanding character and potential.”

Now a rising sophomore at Princeton University, Zhang continues to pursue his passion for science and engineering at the highest level.

The future is certainly looking bright in Livermore! If you know another Star Student making an impact, nominate them today to be featured on Patch!
