Midway Fire 85% Contained, 580 Reopened

Firefighters aggressively responded to a Thursday afternoon fire that broke out along 580 near Mountain House.

LIVERMORE, CA — The 262-acre Midway Fire is 85% contained as of 7 a.m. Friday, according to CalFire.

All lanes of 580 are reopened as of 8:40 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. 580 was closed from Patterson Pass Road and I-205 for over five hours Thursday afternoon.

The fire began at two acres at around 2:51 p.m., then spread quickly and jumped across the freeway, according to Cal Fire. At least 150 personnel, including a helicopter and 15 engines, and reinforcements from across the state helped contain the blaze by around 5 p.m. The fire was held at the aqueduct and did not make it far beyond 580.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but preliminary reports indicate that it may have started new downed wires, according to Alameda County Fire Department Chief Randall West. PG&E is on the scene investigating, according to West. Patch reached out to PG&E for further information.

No injuries or structural damage are reported as of 10 a.m. Monday.
