- The LBPD sent out a message Friday that involves burglaries in the Park Estates neighborhood. There have been reports of 11 incidents between June 12 and December 12. The PD says that these involved suspects breaking in during daytime hours while occupants weren’t home. At this time, there are no suspects and the PD will be “increasing police resources in the area” for deterrence. (Long Beach Police Department)
- COVID is spreading quickly in the 90807 ZIP code. The latest LB COVID numbers show that the seven-day average cases per 100K sat at 19.10. This figure makes it the ZIP code with the most new cases. (LBDHHS)
- We learned Saturday that LB is home to the first U.S. location of Torisho! Located at 730 Long Beach Boulevard, it is a Japanese deep-friend chicken sensation. This eatery is a walk-up counter that offers – are you ready for this? – gluten-free fried chicken or, as insiders call it, karaage. A 12-piece wings meal is $15. (The HiLo)
- The LBUSD is looking to sell two of seven surplus properties. One is at 999 Atlantic Avenue and the other one at 4310 Long Beach Boulevard. However, rather than selling them at market value to the highest bidder, the district requested a waiver Wednesday to select a buyer who would meet a “greater community good.” One plan is to turn these properties into affordable housing. (LB Post)
- Located at 2001 River Avenue, the Century Villages at Cabrillo is a supportive housing continuum. It features short-term, transitional, and permanent housing in collaboration with a number of organizations such as Catholic Charities, Salvation Army, and U.S. Vets. On Thursday, the planning commission approved a building project that would allow for the demolishing of 40 old housing units to build 90 new ones. During LB’s last homeless count, volunteers identified 175 veterans. This project could provide housing for 50 of them. Assuming the project begins in spring, it should be completed by 2023.
