Here are the top fffive stories today in Long Beach:
- It wasn’t a peaceful weekend in the City. On Saturday, at around 2 a.m., the LBPD located a man with a gunshot wound near the 100 block of East 10th Street, which is close to Wilson HS. “Police said the victim stated he was walking near the area when he was approached by an unknown female suspect, who shot him and fled the scene.” Another gunshot victim was found close to 5:25 a.m. close to Elm Avenue in the 400 block of West Anaheim Street. “The victim was on foot in the area and became involved in a dispute with an unknown male suspect inside a dark-colored sedan that escalated to the shooting.” A third shooting occurred at 4:55 p.m. near the 300 block of Pine Avenue. In this case, “officers detained a person of interest at the scene, seized a firearm and located shell casings and other evidence that a shooting occurred.” (LB Post, 2)
- A 2024 compliance deadline looms, and we learned Friday that the city intends to “expand its organic recycling program to all commercial accounts” from the 115 currently participating. Tonight, the City Council is expected to approve the purchase of eight additional trash trucks at a possible cost of $3.5 million. The cost of a new green bin and for green waste transportation to a new facility for processing “will be factored into future bills, which the city has said are going to increase.” (LB Business Journal)
- This week, the LBFD recognizes its volunteers. These are the LB Fire Ambassadors, a group of community members. They have “been helping our city & schools by educating (on) the importance of fire safety.” (LBFD)
- The 57th annual Congressional Cup will run from today to Saturday. Insiders call it “the ‘granddaddy’ of modern match racing” in the sailing division. The LB Yacht Club will be the host of the event that it founded in 1965. This year, there are ten teams from five countries competing. (Press-Telegram)
- Did you know that your library card is more valuable than ever? For example, if you have always been interested in genealogy but have no idea how to get started, the Billie Jean King Main Library wants to help! On April 30, the venue hosts a Genealogy Basics Workshop that includes “how to use the Ancestry TM genealogy database available via our LBPL website's Digital Library.” (Eventbrite)
