Here are the top five stories today in Long Beach:
- The LBPD is cracking down on street takeovers. Some drivers learned this the hard way Friday night. The PD “issued eight citations and towed two vehicles Friday night after responding to three separate street takeover events across East and North Long Beach.” The areas were the intersections of Bellflower Boulevard and Stearns Street, Granada Avenue and Second Street, and Paramount Boulevard and South Street. (LB Post)
- A man walking in the 2100 block of Chestnut Avenue Saturday at 12:28 a.m. was stabbed. Officials say he “crossed paths with an ‘unknown number of subjects’, one of whom brandished a weapon and stabbed the man multiple times before fleeing.” Reportedly, the man was involved in a domestic violence incident before, but the stabbing was unrelated to that. (LB Post)
- “The national average price for a gallon of gasoline reached an all-time high Monday morning.” So, why are we paying an extra 30 cents for gas? It turns out that the surcharge dates back to 2015 when the local Torrance refinery caught on fire. Experts say that this mystery fee is “costing Californians about $4 billion a year.” (News Break)
- The Moore League is in play, and Long Beach Poly has a seat to defeat. The girls’ swim team from Wilson is targeting them, and it is now giving them a run for the money. Things are looking good because the Bruins beat the Jackrabbits with 91-79 on Friday. (The562.org)
- The Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services has declared this coming week to be Walk to School Week. Each day has a theme, with Monday being “super strong.” “Walking is a great way to be a superhero by helping to improve your health and taking on climate change,” said Mayor Robert Garcia.
