Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:

  1. Home Depot Smash-and-Grab Update: Last week, we talked about the Lakewood Home Depot that was robbed by a mob of people who had getaway drivers waiting. Four suspects were taken into custody during a traffic stop done by the Beverly Hills PD. On Sunday, the L.A. Sheriff’s Department identified them as young men ranging in age from 19 to 22. The four were “charged with conspiracy to commit burglary.” (ABC)
  2. The Long Beach Grocery Co-op group is a go as of Monday. At this point, it has 800 member-owners, but is hoping to expand to 1,500. The co-op will move into the space vacated by Cirivello’s, which was situated in the Parkview Village shopping center at Bellflower Boulevard and Carson Street. If the co-op continues to grow and succeeds in its fundraising efforts, it will open in October 2022. (LB Business Journal)
  3. On Friday, Mayor Robert Garcia acknowledged reports of the Omicron variant that were filling the news. While it has not yet been identified in the city, officials are keeping watch. The mayor said to “please remember that vaccines and boosters are free, easy to get in Long Beach, and recommended by doctors and our world’s leading scientists.” (@LongBeachMayor)
  4. Grand Prix tickets went on sale Monday. Even though it seems like we just reported on the September race, this one will return to its standard time frame, which is April 8. In addition to the attractions that race attendees have come to expect, there will be “a weekend double-header of the Porsche Carrera Cup North America.” You can buy tickets on the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach website for “$37 for a Friday general admission ticket to $168 for a three-day ticket.” (LB Post)
  5. Steven Estrada, the communist who is running for the city council seat in District One, announced Monday that he is planning for his actions after being elected. One of them will be to “completely re-haul the Citizen’s Police Complaint Commission.” He intends to do so by removing “the influence of corporate consultants and police unions.” (@StevenEstradaD1)
