- On Friday evening, there was a two-alarm fire at 2732 East 1st Street, which is in the Bluff Park neighborhood. The LBFD extinguished the fire in about half an hour. Nobody was hurt. Also, the FD was able to “preserve this historic house that was the first house built in the area in 1905.” (@lbfirefighters)
- El Dorado duck pond construction is going to start Monday, even though the project budget is $2 million short. The $9-million project was approved in December by the City Council and includes “wetlands landscaping, plugging leaks and cracks in the pond’s structure and fixing a pedestrian walkway that poses accessibility issues.” If the City finds the needed funds, construction should be done by the summer of 2023. (LB Post)
- Last Monday, we reported on the Crow’s Nest Bar shooting, where a customer was suspected of fatally shooting an employee. On Friday, the PD arrested a 33-year-old man from Wilmington. The suspect has been booked “on one count of murder and is currently being held in the Long Beach City Jail on $2,000,000 bail.” (Patch, LBPD)
- There was a traffic fatality near Bellflower Boulevard and Beach Drive. On Friday afternoon, a pedestrian, possibly experiencing homelessness, “was attempting to cross Bellflower Boulevard outside a crosswalk.” He was struck by a 2002 Acura driven by an unlicensed 17-old-teen and then by a 2005 Honda Pilot operated by a 59-year-old man. Both drivers remained on the scene. “Distracted driving, speeding, and impairment do not appear to have been a factor in this collision.” (LBPD)
- Mental Health America of Los Angeles wants to train you “to become a certified mental health recovery specialist.” Joining the Jump Start Fellowship Program takes a 12-week time commitment, is FREE, and pays you $40 a day. You have until February 4 to apply. When you’re done, you’ll “have completed 180 classroom hours and 240 internship hours.” Learn more by calling 562-285-1330, extension 1051. (Press Telegram)
