Here are the top five stories in Long Beach today:
- There is a shopping center on 4th Street between The Promenade and Long Beach Boulevard. Do you know what it is called? It used to be City Place; then it rebranded to become The Streets; it rebranded once more to return to City Place. On Thursday, it underwent its latest change; it is now Mosaic. “The rebrand comes as the property owners move to implement plans to demolish part of the shopping center for a mixed-use development.” We discussed this recently with the loss of the Found Theater. (LB Business Journal)
- The Federal Bar used to do business at 102 Pine Avenue. It closed in March 2020. On Thursday morning, right around 10:45 a.m., the LBPD responded to reports of a commercial burglary at this location. A witness “said he watched as two individuals walked away with multiple items after breaking into the building, including several metal pipes.” No arrests were made. (LB Post)
- On Wednesday morning, there was a shooting in the area of 67th Street and Atlantic Avenue. Police investigated and located a 42-year-old suspect. “He was booked into Long Beach City Jail for attempted murder, prohibited possessor in possession of a firearm, prohibited possessor in possession of ammunition, carrying a loaded firearm – not registered owner, and obstructing/resisting.” (LBPD)
- The Long Beach Unified School District announced “that when the 2022-23 school year begins on Aug. 31, LBUSD high schools will start at 8:45 a.m. and middle schools will start earlier.” Taking this step puts the district in compliance with a 2019 law. This change will “impact sports schedules, extracurricular activities and extra periods” for which a workaround is not yet available. (LB Post)
- CSULB has a shark lab that tracks white sharks. The lab has a total of six solar-powered buoys with cell receivers that send text alerts to scientists whenever a tagged fish swims within 300 yards of it. “The Shark Lab installed six buoys across Southern California, including Carpinteria, Coronado, Del Mar, Huntington Beach, and Long Beach.” (Spectrum News 1)
