Here are the top five stories in Long Beach today:

  1. Prohibited meat products are arriving at the LB Port with alarming frequency, a Monday report reveals. So far, officials noted a 33% increase in shipments “of prohibited pork, chicken, beef and duck products.” Smuggling the meat from China into the United States could be dangerous because it might introduce “African Swine Fever, Classical Swine Fever, virulent Newcastle Disease, Foot and Mouth Disease, Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza, and Swine Vesicular Disease.” (LB Post)
  2. On Sunday morning, the LBPD discovered a dead body in the 1900 block of East Ocean Boulevard near the beach bike path. “Homicide detectives were called to the scene due to the suspicious location of the body and lack of explanation for her death.” If you have any information, please contact Homicide Detectives Donald Collier or Leticia Gamboa at 562-570-7244. (KTLA)
  3. There was a deadly vehicle accident March 8 near 7th Street and Magnolia Avenue. A 2011 Hyundai Sonata struck a motorcycle. The rider later died. The driver remained on the scene, and “neither speed nor impaired or distracted driving appears to be a factor in this collision.” (LBPD)
  4. Nico Iamaleava is back! The star quarterback left Long Beach Poly’s Jackrabbits and went to Warren when the pandemic shut down the seasons. On Monday, he arrived back at 1600 Atlantic as one of the top football players in the nation, a 6-6 phenom with scholarship offers from across the country, from Alabama to Tennessee to Oregon. 5. Since we couldn’t avoid the time change, we might as well make the best of it. We learned Monday that Walk Long Beach has created 35 walking loop cards – so far. They take you through Belmont Shore, Wrigley Central, and Craftsman Village among other destinations. Check out the card and learn about the area in the process. (Walk Long Beach)
