Here are the top five stories in Long Beach today:

  1. A 46-year-old man was shot to death on Friday at around 9:13 p.m. in the 6100 block of LB Boulevard. “The preliminary investigation revealed that a male suspect approached a group of subjects and got into a verbal dispute with the group, which escalated into a shooting.” The suspect and the survivors fled the scene. “Anyone with information regarding the incident is urged to contact Homicide Detectives Donald Collier or Leticia Gamboa (562) 570-7244.” (LBPD)
  2. The LB Water Department wants residents to know that representatives “would never call a customer demanding immediate payment.” This warning came Friday on the heels of reports that there are “scammers who are impersonating Water Department employees and threatening to shut down customers’ utilities unless they pay immediately over the phone.” At this time, LB Water isn’t shutting off service to customers. (LB Post)
  3. We learned on Friday that the “number of new coronavirus cases each day is no longer declining in Los Angeles County.” There were 1,167 new COVID infections in the county, which shows an uptick from the 784 from a day earlier. “The highly infectious BA.2 subvariant of COVID-19 is increasing its influence in the county, representing 32% of cases.” If you haven’t gotten your booster, now is a good time to make an appointment. (Patch)
  4. On Wednesday, at 6 p.m., the Planning Bureau will discuss potential zoning regulation updates “in the area bounded by Pacific Coast Highway, 10th Street, Magnolia, and Ximeno avenues.” “The plan will create a more complete community where residents, businesses, jobs, and shopping are located near each other with a more pedestrian-friendly design.” Find out the details and give your input! (City of LB)
  5. The LB Airport’s new ticketing lobby officially opens on May 4. “The $26 million, 16,700-square-foot building will feature about 30 ticketing kiosks for passengers to check in for their flights.” There will be touchless machines and 21 ticketing counters assigned to airlines based on demand. Another new addition is “a $25.5 million checked baggage inspection system.” You can check out the improvements on April 30, when the venue hosts an open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. (LB Business Journal)
