Here are the top five stories today in Long Beach:

  1. On Tuesday, at around 5:18 p.m., the LBFD responded to a fire on the 14th floor of 600 East Ocean Boulevard. “The fire was extinguished, preventing its spread to neighboring units. Smoke was removed & no injuries were reported.” (LBFD)
  2. We learned on Tuesday that the City has “denied a special-event permit for the 2022 Sprint Nationals races planned for August in Marine Stadium.” You may remember that, last year, a racer died at the event. “It was the second death in the past three Sprint Nationals.” Officials concluded that “the event was too dangerous as currently set up.” “The reasons why they say they’re denying the permit are all erroneous. If they would just sit down with me, I could correct them,” the event organizer says. (Press-Telegram)
  3. If you’re planning to spend the Easter Sunday holiday at El Dorado Park, the City would like you to know that the “388-acres of open space, picnicking areas, playgrounds, bicycle trails, and many other amenities” will be open. Hours run from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., here’s an $8 per car parking fee, and officials will “close the gates to vehicles once the lots are at capacity, and vehicles exiting the park may not be granted re-entry if the park closes for capacity.” (Patch)
  4. We’re losing Bixby Knolls’ Liberation Brewing Company on April 30. In business for just four years, the venue “is looking into changing its Alcoholic Beverage Control license to allow for the sale of its bottled beer at bottle shops, farmers markets, and festivals.” The brewery was not able to weather “the pandemic’s stranglehold on the business.” (The HiLo)
  5. Sesame Dinette at 1750 Pacific Avenue opened last Thursday. A reviewer described it as “a new culinary oasis sandwiched between a pharmacy and a laundromat.” Venture in, and you will have your pick of spiced dal hand-pie, green garlic and paneer biscuit, and fresh yogurt with pickled kumquats, puffed grains, and honey. And those are just the earlier lunch favorites! (The HiLo)
