Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:
- The Coastal Environmental Rights Foundation is suing over the 735 fireworks released during the July 3 "Big Bang on the Bay," which was put on by John Morris and his Naples Restaurant Group, LLC. A Thursday report notes that the Foundation claims “Mr. Morris and his restaurant don't have a NPDES ("National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System") permit but acknowledges that a number of government entities — including the CA Regional Water Quality Control Board, the Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board and the City and Port of Long Beach — haven't pursued the issues involved including notices of violation that the environmental group sent before it filed suit.” You will remember that we talked back in August about the elegant tern chick rescue efforts. (LBReport, Patch)
- Small businesses really would like to see you this Saturday! As noted on Friday, the Belmont Shore Business Association is hosting a scavenger hunt with prizes. The Downtown Long Beach Business Alliance will also do something that allows shoppers to win prizes. “Behind every little storefront, there are people,” said the executive director of the Bixby Knolls Business Improvement Association. (LB Business Journal)
- Don’t let the Thanksgiving Day leftovers linger in the back of the fridge until they go bad. According to Friday’s tweet from Long Beach Recycles, you only get three to four days until the food has to be consumed. A better idea is to buy yourself some time by freezing the food. (@lbrecycles)
- When a Nature’s Harvest box truck operator started driving recklessly on Thursday, the PD took notice. Before long, there was a chase underway that led through Carson, LB, and Compton before ending at Atlantic Avenue and Atlantic Drive in East Rancho Dominguez. The driver, a 25-year-old woman, tried to run away but “was arrested on suspicion of assault on a peace officer, driving under the influence of drugs, evading arrest and driving a stolen vehicle.” (LB Post)
- Thursday was also not a good day for a 43-year-old man who “allegedly tried to hit another man with his vehicle and then barricaded himself” at a home on the “3100 block of Claremore Avenue in the El Dorado Park Estates neighborhood.” SWAT rolled, but the suspect was not arrested until a K9 came on the scene. The suspect was arrested “on suspicion of misdemeanor battery, misdemeanor vandalism, resisting arrest, evading police and reckless driving” in addition to “felony assault with a deadly weapon.” (LB Post)
