Here are the top five stories in Long Beach today:

  1. Long Beach Gelson's at 6255 East 2nd Street is hiring! The company will hold a hiring event on April 6 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. “The supermarket boasts a 'generous' employee discount, flexible scheduling, weekly pay, career growth opportunities, competitive union pay rates with benefits and retirement plans.” (Patch)
  2. Lakewood and LB intersect at various places. Not surprisingly, crime is a problem in both areas. Unlike LB, Lakewood doesn’t have its own PD but works with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. We learned Thursday that it intends “to allocate $175,000 for private security over the span of three months as part of a pilot program” to combine the Sheriff’s Department and private patrols for the area. (Press-Telegram)
  3. The Technology and Innovation Commission recommended on Wednesday that the City needs to put together an independent review commission for its surveillance technology. Moreover, it asked the City to “impose a moratorium on all current and future facial recognition tech.” LBPD Chief Wally Hebeish previously stated that “the department compares video, shot by surveillance cameras or bystanders” to the mugshots stored in LACRIS. (LB Post)
  4. Up and Running Again is a non-profit organization that has been working with eight Rescue Mission residents to run The Fontana Days Half Marathon on June 4. In fact, this partnership has been in existence for nine years. “Running with the team and volunteers helps individuals build up their self-esteem, relationship skills, and reach new milestones.” (LB Local News)
  5. We learned Thursday that the Long Beach City College’s School of Career Technical Education has become an Official Sponsor of the Acura Grand Prix of LB. “As an Official Sponsor, Long Beach City College will receive colorful signage around the iconic Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach racetrack in key locations, including the large pedestrian bridge between Turns 9 and 10. In addition, LBCC will have a display in the Lifestyle Expo promoting its many instructional programs.” (LB Local News)
