Homeless Man Shot To Death In Long Beach

A man experiencing homelessness was shot multiple times and killed early Sunday morning in Long Beach, police said.

LONG BEACH, CA — Long Beach police are investigating the death of a homeless man who was shot early Sunday morning.

At about 6:58 a.m. Sunday, police responded to the 600 block of East South Street to assist the Fire Department with an unresponsive person who wasn't breathing. When officers arrived, they noticed the victim had multiple gunshot wounds in his upper body.

"Long Beach Fire Department personnel determined the victim deceased at the scene," the Long Beach Police Department said in a statement.

The victim was identified as 43-year-old Ali Jabbaar Phannix, who was experiencing homelessness according to LBPD.

Homicide detectives are still investigating the motive and circumstances for the shooting. They believe there were witnesses of the shooting in the area and encouraged anyone with information to come forward.
