Here are the top five stories in Long Beach today:

  1. Did you see the smoke on Thursday downtown at Ocean Boulevard and Pine Avenue? It happened right during the lunch hour when a fire started in the closed-off Jergins Tunnel. “Long Beach Fire Capt. Jack Crabtree said the cause of the fire was not known.” (LB Post)
  2. What is going on at Lincoln Park? Last month, we talked about the newly re-opened park already being vandalized. On Friday late morning, right around 11:16 a.m., there was an attempted robbery with subsequent shooting. “The victim told police that he was in the park when two male suspects approached him and tried to rob him, which escalated into the shooting.” (Patch, LB News)
  3. The city has published a Hazard Mitigation Plan survey. On its Twitter feed, the city said it encourages “residents and business owners to share their knowledge of local hazards through a public survey now through March 31.” When you visit the survey, it asks you what steps you’ve taken to prepare for a disaster, how you get your information about emergency preparedness, and so on. 4. Mayor Robert Garcia released a statement Tuesday that says, “Long Beach stands firmly with the international community in support of the Ukrainian people.” We have already talked about the landmarks that are illuminated in blue and yellow at night. “We stand ready to assist those who have been displaced by this Russian attack,” he explained. (City of LB)
  5. On April 7, Alex Zanardi and Bill Auberlen will be inducted into the LB Motorsports Walk of Fame. The event is a “collaborative celebration with the City of Long Beach and Grand Prix Association of Long Beach.” This 16th annual ceremony is open to the public. Simply show up in front of the LB Convention Center at 11 a.m. on that day. (City of LB)
