Here are the top five stories today in Long Beach:

  1. Last year, in the fall, we talked a lot about a former LBUSD safety officer who allegedly shot an 18-year-old woman near Millikan High School. The 52-year-old suspect had suggested there was a legal error in deeming evidence against him sufficient to proceed to trial. He also wanted to reduce bail to $100,000. Superior Court Judge Richard Goul rejected both. “The case will proceed to trial before a jury that would have the prerogative to come to a different interpretation of the facts,” he noted. (LB News)
  2. Today marks the opening day for the new Admiral Kidd Park Food Finders Hub. Head to 2125 Santa Fe Avenue at 9 a.m. to find out more about this partnership of a non-profit, the city and the community. “Our partnership with Food Finders is one way to help ensure access to healthy food for our hard-hit residents,” said Mayor Robert Garcia. “Food Finders will staff the Hub and manage weekly food distribution and monthly programming, including a community marketplace.” (LB Local News)
  3. On Thursday, at around 9:12 p.m., the LBPD received alerts of vandalism on East 4th Street. Someone had damaged a car and three businesses. Officers caught up with a 31-year-old man experiencing homelessness in the area and booked him “for attempt burglary from (a) vehicle, vandalism of $400 or more, (being) under the influence of a controlled substance, and possession of burglary tools.” (LBPD)
  4. Fans of Yong Sin, listen up! TransVagrant and Gallery 478 at 478 West 7th Street in San Pedro will present Sotto Voce: Lowering the Volume. It includes the artist’s most recent works and will open on May 5. However, there will be an artist’s reception on May 7 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. (Random Lengths News)
