The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Long Beach.

Hey, neighbors; today is National Megalodon Day, which commemorates the day the Aurora Fossil Museum opened in 1978! It's me, Sylvia, your host of the Long Beach Daily. Let's get this Wednesday started off right, with a quick guide to everything you need to know about what's going on in town.
A silver sedan drove away from the scene of a fatal shooting. Also, the loud military jets should be gone today. Finally, a shoutout to the Los Angeles Trial Lawyers’ Charities!

📢 Fireworks Poll!
Fireworks are illegal in Long Beach. If the police are called, you may have to pay as much as $20,000 in response costs plus citation fines of $1,000. How do you feel about that? Please let me know your thoughts! (As of today, 10.1% don’t want fireworks, 79.5% want “safe and sane fireworks,” and 0.6% don’t care one way or the other while another 9.9% want to buy what they choose.)
Here are the top stories in Long Beach today:
- On Monday evening, officers headed down to LB Boulevard and 49th Street, where callers reported shots were fired. They found a man who was killed by a gunshot. “Witnesses say (a) suspect was last seen Southbound on Long Beach Blvd in a silver sedan.” (LBPD, LB Local News)
- If your windows have rattled because of loud airplane noise, you’re not alone. Four F/A-18 military jets are running operations from the LB Airport. Because these aircraft do not fall under the noise regulations, they will be “significantly louder” than what you’re used to. The good news is that they’re supposed to finish today. (Patch)
- Not too long ago, we reported on the trash fire that ended up burning the youth baseball backstop at Heartwell Park, where the younger kids participate in the Buddy Ball program. Even though the teams didn’t cancel games, it was frustrating because they “had refurbished all four fields before this season.” Enter the Los Angeles Trial Lawyers’ Charities. The group collected funds to replace the backstop, which should be installed today. (Press-Telegram)
- Last week, we talked about the LB School District’s summer food program for children between the ages of 1 and 18. On Monday, we learned that the Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine will host its own Summer Food Service Program “to provide free, nutritious meals to Long Beach children and youth throughout the summer months.” It will run from 6-21 to 8-26 from Monday through Friday at 24 locations. (Patch)
- Mark your calendars! There’s a shred event this Saturday at the LBCC Pacific Coast Campus Parking Lot 2. The event will run from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. or until the mobile shredding truck is full, whichever comes first. You can bring up to three boxes of documents, file folders, and envelopes to be shredded.
