Here are the top five stories in Long Beach today:
- Responding to the information about the Brooklyn Substation, the LBPD wants residents to know that “there are no known threats to the City of Long Beach, however out of an abundance of caution, we will be providing increased patrols throughout the City.” (LBPD)
- The 5251 2nd Street Starbucks employees are petitioning to unionize. “The conditions we have been working under and the unfair labor practices we have seen in the past year have opened our eyes to the value in forming a union,” they explained. These workers join those at the 3390 East 7th Street and 4833 Candlewood Street locations. “Starbucks is being assaulted in many ways by the threat of unionization,” CEO Howard Schultz said. (LB Post)
- Bright and early on Monday morning at 4:16 a.m., the fire department headed to the 1700 block of East Artesia Boulevard. Once there, the LBFD “identified a garage adjacent to a building w/ minor damage.” There were no injuries and an investigation is ongoing. (LBFD)
- We learned on Monday that school enrollment is down across the state. Right now, there are 5,892,240 students for the current school year. This represents an overall drop of about 110,000 students. Concurrently, private school enrollment went up by 9,000 learners. “California Department of Education officials would not comment on where those students went. Some school district officials said they also are looking for answers.” (Patch)
- If “masked, alien, synth-punk cavemen nutballs” are your game, then Fartbarf is your name. The band has cut back from its 140-show-a-year schedule and is writing new material. See them on Saturday at Alex’s Bar. (LA Weekly)
