LONG BEACH, CA — A suspect remained at large Thursday after a shooting in a Long Beach alleyway took the life of one man, police said.

The Long Beach Police Department received multiple reports of gunshots heard in the 1800 block of Gardenia Avenue at about 1:25 p.m. on Wednesday. When police arrived they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound in his upper body.

Officers attempted life-saving measures on the victim before Long Beach Fire Department Paramedics relieved them and took the man to a hospital. The victim was pronounced dead by hospital staff.

Detectives investigating the incident determined that a man approached the victim while he was standing in a nearby alley. The suspect shot the victim and then fled on foot, police said.

The identity of the victim was withheld pending notification of his next of kin. The motive for the shooting remains under investigation.
