Hey, people of Long Beach! It's me again, Sylvia, your host of the Long Beach Daily.
Threats of violence against local schools culminated in a Mayfair HS lockdown. Also, the LB Animal Shelter has found that its new way of interacting with the public is resulting in more pet adoptions. Finally, there was a flight path change that probably got your dishes rattling.

- Worry about threats of violence against local high schools continues. On Wednesday, the PD asserted that threats made against Wilson and Poly high schools were not credible. “All of these threats were published anonymously through various social media platforms,” the PD spokesperson said. On Dec. 3, there was a threat against Cabrillo High School. That said, on Thursday there was a threat against Mayfair High School , which is part of the BUSD, that officials took quite seriously. Right around 2:33 p.m., the school alerted parents that there was a lockdown in process. Students were escorted to Cityline Church at 6236 Woodruff Avenue to be reunited with their parents. There is no information yet whether the threat was confirmed. (LB Post, FB, 2)
- Long Beach Animal Care Services announced Thursday that its adoption rate increased by 60% since 2018, which is its highest adoption rate ever. In real numbers, this means that adoptions went from 471 to 783. The shelter credits its change in business model, “from walk-in adoptions to an appointment-based system,” for creating a one-on-one experience that benefits prospective adopters and would-be pets. You can make an appointment Wednesday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on weekends from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (City of LB)
- Did you hear them? Unless you live in the regular flight path of planes from the LB Airport, you could not help it. The airport announced Friday morning that its primary runway, 12-30, was “temporarily closed due to a disabled aircraft.” Because the facility diverted flights to runway 26-R, residents who do not typically hear planes suddenly did. - The Port of LB is reporting a successful reduction in the number of ships at anchor right off the coast. Officials said Thursday that the number went down from 80 to 30. By “allowing ships leaving Asia to get in line upon departure,” the vessels remain at anchor outside the air quality basin. (Fox LA)
- Did you know about the Beach Garden Social House at 1923 East Broadway? It is now a cozy LGBTQIA+ community gathering place, “where people can sit, be comfortable, have a cocktail, have a quick bite to eat.” The venue opened in late October, does “trivia night on Wednesdays, bingo on Thursdays and brunch on Saturdays and Sundays.” (The HiLo)
