Here are the top stories in Long Beach today:
- Port Hueneme in Ventura County is stepping in to help relieve the bottleneck at the ports of L.A. and LB. The U.S. Navy, in partnership with the Oxnard Harbor District, allows for the processing of container freight. This assistance will mainly benefit smaller box ships. "The Navy recognizes the importance of being good neighbors with our local communities, and makes every effort to provide support when current operational requirements allow," said Capt. Robert Kimnach III on Monday. (The Maritime Executive)
- If the names David and Dennis Robicheau cause you to salivate, you’re not alone. The father and son team has given meaning to the term “LB BBQ” with pop-ups at strategic locations. Now, the team will take over the space vacated by Restauration at 2708 East 4th Street. Insiders define the food as “a fusion of Texas-inspired slow cooking with a Cajun influence, drawing seasoning inspiration from their connection to the Cambodian community.” According to a Tuesday report, the new eatery will be called Shady Grove Foods and plans to open on March 1, 2022. (The HiLo)
- With the New Year, there will be changes to the ways LB residents deal with their trash. The statewide organic recycling law will go into effect. We’re going to get a third trash can -- we already have trash and recycling bins -- and a higher monthly bill. The new bin is for organic materials such as yard clippings and food scraps. As of Monday, the City is still looking for “a suitable site to transport organic waste to be processed at.” And just in case you’re rolling your eyes right now, be aware that there are fines involved if you don’t sort your organic waste properly. (LB Post)
- Unless the redistricting map is challenged in court, it takes effect on December 18. What does this mean for the fifth council district (CD5)? Its incumbent council member has been written out of the district. All the candidates who declared an interest in running are also no longer residents of CD 5. As of Tuesday, it’s even unclear if the incumbent plans to move back into her district to run again. If anyone wants to throw their hat into the ring, they have until March 11 to declare their candidacy. (LB Post)
- If you need to get into the Christmas spirit, head to 2nd & PCH. A Monday run-down of the plans for the venue will make even the most committed Scrooge rethink the bah-humbug. On 12-3, there’s a tree lighting ceremony; on the same day, the PCH Movies and Moonlight series will restart with “Elf.” From 12-4 to 12-21, Saturday through Tuesday, Santa Claus will be in residence for selfies. Bring the four-legged friends on Tuesdays for Paws & Claus photos with the big elf. (OC Breeze)
