Here are the top five stories today in Long Beach:

  1. Public intoxication is a bad idea. Physically assaulting “a marine patrol officer Saturday night in Shoreline Village” in the process is worse. The suspect is a 23-year-old man who was detained around 8 p.m. and booked “on suspicion of battery on a peace officer, resisting/obstructing a public officer and public intoxication.” (LB Post)
  2. A car hit a power pole Sunday morning around 4:24 a.m. The single-vehicle collision happened “in the area of Orange Avenue and Del Amo Boulevard.” As a result, some 319 SCE customers started their Sunday with a power outage that wouldn’t be fixed until the afternoon. (LB Post)
  3. Cal State Long Beach and Cal State Fullerton basketball team players have been getting death threats. “Following the university’s loss to Cal State Fullerton in the Big West Tournament Championship game on March 12, both team’s Facebook pages received various messages from the unnamed individual, most of which were littered with threats towards players and their families.” We learned Friday that an Indiana man is being investigated in connection with these threats. The Indiana District Attorney is involved, the suspect is looking at felonies, and “at least one of the victims will also be pursuing charges.” (CBS)
  4. The City wants you to observe Tsunami Preparedness Week, which runs from March 21 through 25. “Educational tsunami preparedness tips will be shared through the City’s Disaster Preparedness website, City social media platforms and outreach materials to local business associations. Residents will also have a chance to win a “go-kit” by answering disaster preparedness questions on Facebook and Instagram.” (City of LB)
  5. The LBFD posted video on Friday of the Fire Recruit Class 2022A participating in its first ever live-fire drill. “Live fires teach safe & effective skills that are needed in a real-life setting.” Part of the training is maintaining “their own safety & safety of their fellow firefighters.” (@LBFD)
