Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:
- The LBPD is taking a proactive approach to organized retail thefts. After the rush on a Nordstrom store at the Westfield Topanga Mall in the Canoga Park area, officers don't want to see something similar here. On Wednesday, the PD installed mobile cameras in potentially vulnerable business districts. These cameras are highly visible, which is part of their deterrence. (@LBPD)
- Someone is going to be on Santa’s nice list this year. The LBFD reported Wednesday that an anonymous donor “donated $2,500 worth of toys” to support the Spark of Love toy drive. You don’t have to give that much to participate. Any LB Fire Station has boxes where you can drop off “new, unwrapped, toys, sports equipment, or school supplies. Items for teens are also needed.” (Long Beach Fire Department/Friends of LB Firefighters)
- A shout-out to the Millikan football players! On Wednesday, the school’s football program went to the LB Rescue Mission to assist with serving Thanksgiving dinners. They plated food, set tables, washed dishes, and did whatever the staff needed to serve people experiencing homelessness. (The562.org)
- There was a shooting Tuesday night “in the 2600 block of Lakewood Boulevard in East Long Beach.” This is where the Chevron gas station and the Holiday Inn are situated. A 17-year-old was shot in what seems to have been a gang-related crime. The LBPD chased down two suspects, one a 15-year-old boy and the other a 20-year-old man from Los Angeles. (LB Post)
- What’s going on with Walker’s Café at 700 West Paseo del Mar in San Pedro? It’s a favorite neighborhood haunt that’s been around since the 1940s. Since that time, it developed a loyal following of neighborhood residents, port workers, bikers, and anyone else who wanted one of the Bessie burgers. As of Thursday, there’s still no word if the eatery will reopen, the owner is mum, and the property is not listed for sale. If anyone knows the owner, please reach out and let them know that there’s an effort underway to keep Walker’s Café in place and open! (Daily News)
