Here are the top five stories today in Long Beach:
- There was a deadly shooting Sunday at around 3:30 p.m. Taking place at a gas station near Artesia Boulevard and Cherry Avenue, a woman was killed. “The suspect fled the area in a vehicle, resulting in a department-authorized pursuit. Eventually, the suspect was taken into custody by LAPD.” (LB Local News)
- Remember when we warned you about the DUI checkpoint that the PD had announced for last Friday? On Monday, the LBPD released its tally. Officers set up shop at PCH and Daisy Avenue from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. “Sixteen drivers were cited for operating a vehicle unlicensed or with a suspended/revoked license. 1,222 vehicles drove through the checkpoint, 375 of which were screened.” Besides that, “LBPD officers arrested two drivers for driving under the influence.” (LBPD)
- In February, you might have seen some youngsters on Pine Avenue with camera equipment. We learned Saturday that they were students from Wilson HS who were tasked with the assignment to “create a short documentary film based on the theme of ‘Through the Years,’ and they had just eight hours to cultivate their documentary from start to finish.” When finished, they submitted their work to “Crazy 8’s competition for the 2022 Student Television Network National Convention” and won second place! (LB Post)
- Long Beach State University named Crystal Washington its Player of the Week. An accomplished track & field athlete, Washington “shattered the LBSU record in the triple jump, besting the previous mark by over a foot at 42 feet, 2.75 inches to become the school record holder in both indoor and outdoor.” (@LBSUAthletics)
- Did you miss the Lowrider Los Angeles Super Show on Saturday? Crystal Niebla was there and took stunning photos. “Never lose your roots, language, and tradition,” an attendant who grew up in the lowrider culture explained. (The HiLo)
