Here are the top five stories in Long Beach today:
- A man was shot just before midnight on Saturday. It happened in the 2400 block of Fashion Avenue. “The victim was shot with a handgun by a suspect who fled in a compact vehicle.” The LBPD is investigating the shooting as gang-related. (Fox 11)
- On Friday, Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz met with union-minded workers in the city. When a barista asked the CEO about the company’s growing union movement, he responded with, “if you hate Starbucks so much, why don’t you go somewhere else?” At this time, this barista is “leading the unionization effort at the Second and Covina store in Long Beach.” (Perfect Union)
- With another successful Grand Prix in the books, the Grand Prix Foundation of LB is nevertheless considering a complete event overhaul. We learned Sunday that the group will announce changes, which include a new partnership, to make up for the financial struggles that came after the end of the Pro/Celebrity Race event and the Toyota withdrawal. - If you ever wanted to get inside the mind of one of the race car drivers, you can find out what two-time IndyCar Series winner Pato O’Ward thinks of the LB course. Speaking to reporters on Saturday, he explained that “there’s not a lot of room for error, it’s a difficult track just because it’s technical.” Qualifying well and starting near the front makes a difference. Besides that, “people overlook the physicality of racing.” (The HiLo)
- The LBPD’s East Division was able to make a child’s day. A boy’s bicycle went missing, and the police were called. Not only did the officers take a report, but they also located the bike, and returned it to the boy. “No matter how big or small the task might be, our officers will always do their best to help our community,” the PD explained.
